The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) released a press statement announcing it has implemented a series of measures to manage the disruption arising from the recent IndiGo operational issues, aiming to minimise inconvenience for air travellers. According to official updates, air travel operations across the country are stabilising, with all other domestic airlines operating normally and IndiGo progressively restoring its schedule. IndiGo’s flight operations increased from 706 on December 5 to 1,565 on December 6, with the number expected to reach approximately 1,650 by the end of the day.
Airfare Regulation
Following the surge in airfares caused by widespread cancellations and shifting demand, the Ministry introduced an immediate cap on ticket prices. This intervention was intended to maintain fare affordability across affected routes. Since the cap took effect, reported fare levels have moderated. All airlines have been instructed to adhere to the revised fare framework.
Passenger Refunds and Rescheduling
MoCA has directed IndiGo to complete refunds for cancelled or significantly delayed flights by 8:00 PM today. The airline has processed refunds amounting to ₹610 crore so far. Airlines have been instructed not to levy additional charges for rescheduling travel affected by cancellations. Dedicated support teams have been established to assist passengers with refund and rebooking queries.
Baggage Handling
The Ministry has also mandated IndiGo to trace and return all baggage separated from passengers during the disruption within 48 hours, with continuous communication throughout the process. As of yesterday, IndiGo reported the delivery of 3,000 baggage items to passengers nationwide.
Airport Operations
Airport authorities in major cities—including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Goa—have reported normal operational conditions. Passenger flow at check-in, security, and boarding points has remained smooth, supported by heightened on-ground coordination by airport operators and CISF personnel.
Monitoring and Oversight
MoCA’s 24×7 Control Room continues to monitor flight operations, airport conditions, and passenger support requirements in real time. Passenger calls are being addressed promptly, and ministry teams remain deployed at key locations to oversee operational planning, crew management, and passenger-handling processes.
Ongoing Updates
The Ministry has stated that the aviation network is progressing toward full normalcy. Monitoring efforts will continue, and corrective measures will remain in place until operations are fully stabilised. Further updates will be issued as required.
